Living Trichinella larvae were found in four of five polar bear (Thalarctos maritimus) heads which had been stored at -18 deg C for 5-38 months. The numbers of living larvae per 10 g of muscle for the four heads were 3, 60, 100 and 100. Mice fed muscle containing 40 living larvae were found to be infected with large numbers of Trichinella (6600-7000 per mouse) after five weeks. The morphology of the isolates did not appear to differ from that of T. spiralis in domestic animals.
