The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare in India issued an order in August 2001 to establish the National Technical Advisory Group on Immunization (NTAGI) with the purpose of improving national immunization programmes in children by advising the government on policies, practices and implementation. The importance of NTAGI, as well as some directions in which immunization programmes may progress (i.e., establishment of disease surveillance, inclusion of newer vaccines, and decentralization of the immunization programme) are discussed.
