Chromosome banding of peripheral leukocytes of sporadic Burkitt's lymphoma of the left mandible in a 4 yr old boy is reported. According to the analysis of 200 metaphases, the distribution of chromosome number varied from 27-90 with the mode at 46 and an occurrence rate of 79.5%. Abnormalities such as chromatid breaks, despiralization and chromosome fragmentation, etc., were observed. As revealed by Giemsa banding analysis, cells of normal karyotype amounted to 15% and pseudodiploid 78.6%. In 3 of 20 cells, the 14q+ marker chromosome was found with the length of the additional fragment .apprx. 22% of the long arm. Aberration in chromosome number clustered to no. 1, 7 and 14. C-banding analysis showed that no heterochromatin was found in the centromere of most of the chromosomes. The position of C-banding was different from that of the normal subjects and interstitial C-band occurred in a few chromosomes. Abnormality of G and C banding strongly indicates the modification of genetic materials in lymphocytes of Burkitt's lymphoma. According to the characteristic presence of the 14q+ in Burkitt's lymphoma, its relation to etiology and value in diagnosis are discussed.
