Evaluation and treatment of impotence using the inflatable penile prosthesis

Inflatable penile prostheses (IPP) enable patients with impotence to control the timing and degree of their erections. Impotence in over 50% of all men can be traced to organic factors. The surgery to correct it has psychologic implications. A team approach to treatment is suggested. In addition to the urologist, each patient should also be evaluated by a psychologist and/or psychiatrist, and a sexual therapist. Twenty-six IPP were implanted in patients and the results of the surgeries are described. A success rate of 96.1% was achieved.
