Out of 213 canine cutaneous squamous cell carcinomas 128 were localized in the digits. Thus, digits represent the most important site of squamous cell carcinoma in the dog. Multiple squamous cell carcinomas involving 2 or more digits occurred in 7 dogs. There was a highly significant prevalence in Schnauzers and Poodles. The mean age was 9.02 +or- 0.15 years. There was no preference of either sex. Histologically, the tumours were well-differentiated squamous cell carcinomas which had mostly led to destruction of the 3rd phalanx and, less frequently, the 2nd phalanx. In addition there was always deformation or loss of the claw. In most cases the tumour seemed to originate in the epidermis of the wall and/or the palmar surface of the claw. In approximately one-third of 37 follow-up cases there was recurrence or recurrence with formation of metastases within 12 months after the first operation.
