The effect of herpes simplex virus type 2 infection on the genital tract of the female mice--a virological and cytopathological study

Adult virgin female C3H mice were inoculated intravaginally (I/Vag.) with infectious herpes simplex virus type 2 (HSV-2).sbd.Group I, formalin or heat inactivated (HSV-2).sbd.Group II, methylcholanthrene (MC).sbd.Group III and Hanks Balanced Salt Solution (HBSS).sbd.Group IV. An acute vaginocervical infection was established in mice of Group I. Three mice of Group II showed hyperplastic lesions an died of encephalitis between 10th and 17th post-infection (pi) days. Ten mice in Group I showed hyperplastic changes in the epithelium of the genital tract, while only 2 mice showed dysplastic changes. None of the mice of Group I showed any evidence of carcinoma of the cervix/vagina within 52 wk. Three mice of Group II showed hyperplastic epithelium of the genital tract and 4 showed dysplastic epithelial changes. None of the mice of Group II showed carcinoma of the cervix or vagina within 46 wk of latent period. Out of 35 mice in Group III, only 2 mice showed dysplastic changes while 9 developed invasive keratinizing squamous cell carcinoma of the cervix within a latent period of 20-48 wk. None of the control mice in Group IV showed any cytological or histological abnormalities of genital tract.
