The prevalence of some intestinal helminths in Port Harcourt, Nigeria, was studied over the period 1987-1991. Stools from a total of 7476 patients were examined microscopically. Of these, 46% were infested with either one or more of the following helminths: Ascaris lumbricoides (42.29%), hookworms (33.8%), Trichuris trichiura (19.26%) and Strongyloides stercoralis (4.65%). The infected population showed sex and age variation in infection rates: 47% of the patients were males and 53% were females. The highest overall infection prevalence (59%) was found in adults and the lowest infection prevalence (1%) was found in infants. Factors which may affect this variation are discussed.
