Analysis of 81 cases of nonunion of forearm fracture

Cases (81) of nonunion of forearm fracture were treated. Among them 36 had ulnar, 24 radial and 21 radioulnar fractures. The average duration of injury was 17.1 mo. The main factors causing nonunion were severe original fracture therapeutic faults and bone infections. Treatment consisted of rigid internal fixation and grafting with sufficient cancellous bones. Of the cases, 96% were cured by 1 operation and 3 failed owing to infection. Cases (50) were followed up for an average of 12.7 mo.; 78% of them obtained excellent and good functional results. The recovery of supination was better than that of pronation.
