This guide, revised and translated by Eberhard Herrlinger, begins with a note on its use, general introductions to nest construction and location, the brooding period, brood size, egg shape, coloration, size and color anomalies, the hatching process and the growth and feeding of nestlings, and keys to nests, eggs and nestlings. Data are given on brood ecology, nest material, brood period duration, egg shape, size and coloration, the appearance of the nestling and the duration of the nestling period for numerous species of 74 bird families whose scientific and German common names are given. Descriptions and actual size color photographs of the eggs of each species, a list of recommended German books, journals and ornithological organizations, an index of common and scientific names, an index to the color plates of nestlings and eggs and 930 illustrations, 837 of which are in color, are also included.
