The high incidence of breast cancer in the UK is discussed, and some risk foactors are identified. Regular screening by palpation, and the teaching of self-examination is essential at all ages. The advantages of early diagnosis by mammography outweigh the risks of inducing carcinoma by irradiation. Family planning personnel have a vital role to play in education and screening.
