Dengue shock syndrome (DSS) is primarily a complication of dengue haemorrhagic fever (DHF) among children in South East Asia. A case-control study was carried out at a children's hospital in Ho-Chi-Minh city, Vietnam in May-July 2005, to identify the predictive factors of DSS among 1- to 15-year-old patients with DHF. 40 consecutive admitted cases and 40 controls were studied. Associated features of DSS were 7- to 12-year-old age group and re-infection by the dengue virus. Vaccination against Japanese encephalitis B was not statistically significantly associated with DSS. Clinical predictors of DSS were abdominal tenderness, hepatomegaly, lethargy and cold extremities. DSS-associated laboratory features were haematocrit value of >=50% and a platelet cell count of <=75 000/mm3.
