Soyabean production in Zimbabwe has been limited by three diseases in the last decade, namely, red leaf blotch, frog-eye leaf spot and soyabean rust. Phakopsora pachyrhizi, the causal agent of soyabean rust, was first recorded in Zimbabwe in February 1998. Pathologists and breeders have adopted a practical, integrated control strategy, which includes an early prediction of rust infection, the use of effective fungicides, and the development of resistant, agronomically-suitable cultivars. The need for the accurate timing of sprays during reproductive growth is highlighted.
