Effect of anabolic steroids on reproductive function of young mares

Boldenone undecylenate was injected at 1.1 or 4.4 mg/kg body weight into 24 mares and nandrolone decanoate at 1.1 mg/kg into 12 mares (with 12 untreated controls). Injections were given once every 3 weeks for a year. No mare displayed normal oestrus during treatment, although some ovulated. The decrease in the size of the ovaries was most pronounced in those given nandrolone or the higher dose of boldenone. The mares mounted other mares and were aggressive towards other horses. They developed hypertrophy of the clitoris.
