In vitro characteristics of a few antiseptics currently used in human clinical medicine were compared. To reproduce the conditions of a septic wound, monocellular layers were contaminated by a suspension of Staphylococcus aureus. The maximum non-cytotoxic concentration and the bactericidal concentration vs. the infecting microorganism were determined simultaneously for each product. These 2 values enabled establishment of a therapeutic index. The therapeutic indices of the various antiseptics were not very satisfactory and proved the value of this type of determination which allows choosing the least cytotoxic antiseptic of those active on the contaminating species.
