Globalisation of Production, Employment and Poverty: Three Macro-Meso-Micro Studies

This paper examines the impact of globalisation on poverty using a macro-meso-micro framework. This approach is first described and then applied in three case studies: horticulture in Kenya; textiles and garments in Vietnam; and textiles in South Africa. The way in which the global dynamic of the value chain affects workers and their households is examined. The approach presented gives no universal conclusions regarding the impact of globalisation on poverty and the research shows that the outcomes are highly context-dependent. It also shows that even in successful cases the overall impact on poverty has been relatively small. Ce papier examine l'impact de la mondialisation sur la pauvreté à partir d'un cadre macro-meso-micro. Cette approche est d'abord décrite, et ensuite appliquée à trois études de cas, l'horticulture au Kenya, les textiles et l'habillement au Vietnam et les textiles en Afrique du sud. Le mécanisme à travers lequel la dynamique globale de la filière de production affecte les travailleurs et leurs ménages est examiné. L'approche présentée ne donne aucune conclusion universelle quant aux effets de la mondialisation sur la pauvreté, et ce travail montre que les résultats sont étroitement lies au contexte. De plus, même en cas de succès, l'impact global sur la pauvreté est relativement limité.
