Mitochondria and the major histocompatibility complex

Recent work on the inheritance of the maternally transmitted antigen (Mta) in the mouse is discussed. Expression of the antigen appears to be controlled by a mitochondrial gene, mtf (maternally transmitted factor); the structural gene appears to be a class-I MHC gene, hmt (histocompatibility dependent on maternally transmitted factor).
