Endoscopic sphincterotomy in the treatment of choledocholithiasis

Endoscopic sphincterotomy was performed in 17 patients with choledocholithiasis. In 16 h the stone passed and there was no need for surgical intervention. Complications were pancreatitis in one and hemorrhage in another patient. Both recovered without surgery. The adequacy of endoscopic sphincterotomy can be assessed by endoscopic retrograde cholangio-pancreatographic manometry immediately after the procedure.
