Viability, migration, phagocytosis capacity and lysozyme content of alveolar macrophages of rabbits were analyzed after exposure to exhaust gases and tobacco smoke. Ultrastructural analysis of macrophages revealed their marked irreversible changes leading to their reduced adaptation possibilities to airborne pollutants.
