An infertility problem emerged in a 103-cow Friesian dairy herd with a high incidence of lameness. Blood samples from six cows in early lactation for measurement of glutathione peroxidase activity indicated selenium deficiency. In addition to dietary supplementation, a water soluble trace element tablet was introduced. The selenium tablets were submerged in a sachet in the drinking water, and replaced every seven days. Each sachet, containing 300 mg selenium, was sufficient for 25 cows, and should be changed each week. This gives an average selenium intake of 12 mg/cow/week.
