Groups of 4 male Wistar rats weighing 100 to 150 g were given by mouth groundnut oil without or with 20 000 IU retinol alone or with putrescine 5 mu mol/100 g bodyweight daily. After 8 days the rats were killed and lipids from hepatic mitochondria were isolated. In a similar experiment phospholipase A2 activity was estimated in mitochondria. Final bodyweight of the 3 groups was 182.7, 176.6 and 154.0 g, respectively, and liver weight was 8.7, 8.3 and 6.5 g. Mitochondrial triglycerides were decreased by retinol treatment but putrescine reversed that effect. Putrescine also tended to decrease the increase in phospholipase A2 activity induced by retinol.
