Genetic determinants of bacteriocins in Klebsiella pneumoniae

Six bacteriocin producing strains of K. pneumoniae were conjugated with 711 Escherichia coli K12 F- Lac- Nxr at different temperatures and donor:recipient ratios. Bacteriocinogeny could be transferred by all 6 strains. Four strains transferred the genetic determinant when they were mixed with the recipient at 37.degree. C, while the other 2 were able to transfer this character at 22.degree. and 30.degree. C and not at 37.degree. C. Only 1 strain (155) was able to transfer bacteriocinogeny by mixing donors and recipients in equal proportions. As the number of donor cells increased, larger numbers of transconjugants acquired the genetic determinant. In 3 transconjugant strains, bacteriocin production was equal to those of donors, in 2 they were markedly less and in 1 it was only a titer less.
