Details are given of the clinical course of a woman 48 years old undergoing haemodialysis for chronic renal failure, who developed high concentrations of Mn in her serum because of contamination of the sodium bicarbonate crystals, used in the dialysate solution, with manganese sulphate. The pathogenesis of the acute Mn toxicity, and of acute pancreatitis which followed, is discussed.
