Major metabolic aberrations may be induced by alcohol, particularly when intake is heavy and prolonged. Ehtanol (EtOH) absorption from the gastrointestinal tract (GIT) is paced by stomach content. Effects of EtOH as a toxic agent on the GIT are: impeded carrier-mediated nutrient transport, interrupted brush border function, and nutrient transport. Chronic EtOH consumption increases drug tolerance by enhancing the activity of drug metabolizing enzymes. Other abnormalities can occur such as impaired oral glucose tolerance, alcoholic hypoglycemia, hypertriglyceridemia, liver disease, acute pancreatitis, ketosis, changes in protein synthesis, and hyperlipoproteinemia, especially in diabetics.
