Effect of some hormones on the lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) isoenzyme patterns of Holtzman rat mammary glands

Electrophoresis demonstrated the presence of 5 muscle-type lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) isoenzymes in rat mammary gland tissue. Analysis of tissue from a female 1 wk after castration revealed no LDH-5 isoenzyme and a reduction in the intensity of electrophoretic bands for LDH-2, LDH-3 and LDH-4. Treatment of castrated female rats with testosterone propionate failed to induce the missing isoenzyme. LDH pattern was fully restored by treatment with oestrogen.
