Myocardial morphology and biochemistry were studied in 82 patients who died of myocardial infarction. Glycosaminoglycan and hydroxyproline levels in the necrotic area, the juxtanecrotic zone and the intact myocardium were compared to the data collected on glyco- and mucoproteins and collagen metabolites during the patients' life. Apparently, a close correlation exists between the concentration of glyco- and mucoproteins and collagen metabolites in the blood and in the juxtanecrotic area of the myocardium. The collagen metabolites, glyco- and mucoproteins reflect the healing processes in myocardial infarction. The methods used permit intravital assessment of the tissue reaction type; they cannot differentiate the reparative processes by the stage of their growth in macrofocal myocardial infarction of varying volume (transmural and nontransmural).
