Ultrasonography in suspected ectopic pregnancy

B-mode gray scale ultrasonography was performed in 24 patients with suspected ectopic pregnancy. Operative findings and clinical follow-up studies confirmed the diagnosis in 11 patients. Sonographic findings were characteristic of ectopic pregnancy in 9 of these 11 patients, the findings were compatible with the diagnosis in 1 patient and, in 1 patient, no sign of ectopic pregnancy was found (false-negative). There were no false-positive diagnoses. Ultrasonography was also valuable in distinguishing the 13 patients who did not have an ectopic pregnancy.
