Differential diagnosis of mechanical and intrahepatic jaundice using an ultrasonic gray scale imaging

Ultrasonic gray scale scanning was used to examine 113 subjects 18-76 yr old. Of these, 45 had liver cirrhosis, 7 cholangitis, 44 mechanical jaundice (of cholelithic nature in 24 and of a neoplastic genesis in 20 patients). The results of the ultrasonic studies were verified with the aid of liver puncture biopsy, cholecystography and cholangiography, selective angiography and surgical data. To make a differential diagnosis of jaundice, the examination protocol should include ultrasonic gray scale scanning which starts from scanning the liver and intrahepatic ducts, followed by scanning the common bile duct, gallbladder and pancreas. The typical echo signs of the diseases causing jaunice are described.
