A process was developed for sterilizing rubber closures in sealed double nylon bags fitted with Nomex breather strips. The sterilization cycle parameters were determined by monitoring heat penetration during autoclaving and correlating the temperature data with biological impact through the use of spore strips and stoppers contaminated with spore suspension. Other variables of importance to the process are the width of the breather strip, the number of stoppers in the bag and the method of placing the filled bags on pallets for autoclaving.
