Results of a study of 2057 cases seen during 1970-75 are presented; 1075 (52.26%) were culturally positive and 480 (23.33%) microscopically positive but negative on culture. Fungi isolated included Trichophyton rubrum (515 isolates), T. mentagrophytes (291), T. violaceum (36), T. tonsurans (18), T. simii (33), Microsporum gypseum (26), M. canis (24), Epidermophyton floccosum (103) and Candida albicans (29). C. albicans was isolated only from tinea pedis and nail infections. Most patients (80%) lived in rural areas and most (60%) were farmers or manual labourers. Of the clinical types found, tinea corporis predominated (62.8%), followed by tinea pedis (11.28%) and tinea cruris (10.35%). The greatest incidence was in the 11-20 yr age group and during Sept.-Oct., when a high average humidity (85-87%) and high day and night temp. (30-33 degrees C and 23-24 degrees C, respectively) prevail.
