Performance matching in comparative investigations: an option for a motor explanation of behavior

An optional, group-matching procedure for use when a motoric characterization of motor behavior is desirable was proposed and tested. In experiment 1, a rotary pursuit task was employed with the amount of time-on-target across three, 20 s trials that served as the dependent measure. The standard used to compare and/or establish group equivalence was the initial performance values of mildly mentally retarded subjects. The findings in experiment 2 indicated that the procedure employed to generate performance-equivalent nonretarded groups, matched to a performance standard for mildly retarded subjects, was reliable. Results suggested that once a performance-equated aged range of nonretarded subjects was isolated with parity to the mildly retarded standard, a number of nonretarded comparison groups, matched on a preestablished performance standard, may be consistently generated.
