Periostal hypertrophic osteopathy of bones (long bones) in colitis ulcerosa in adolescents

A 14-yr-old girl is reported with periosteal new bone formation at the long bones of the lower arms, the femora, the lower legs and the individual phalanges and metacarpalia after colitis ulcerosa which had lasted for several years and had progressed stagewise. After a clinically recorded new attack, periosteal new bone formation progressed. Some time after the last attack of colitis, periosteal changes in the bones partially receded. Hypothermic explanations aimed at interpreting the pathogenesis of hypertrophic osteoarthropathies and periostoses are given.
