A preliminary study on congenital toxoplasmosis in India

A preliminary study was carried out on 112 mother-newborn pairs and 2 newborn infants to evaluate the problem of congenital toxoplasmosis in India. The subjects were selected on the basis of specific criteria to get a higher yield. Of these cases, 28 mothers and 28 newborns had positive toxoplasma antibody titers in their blood as determined by indirect hemagglutination test at birth or during the early neonatal period. Of the 28 newborns with positive antibody titers, 1 was definitely infected and 2 were probably infected, while 14 others were carrying maternal antibodies which were gradually eliminated.
