Acute optic neuritis (ON) in humans with unknown etiology was reviewed. A statistical survey of ON revealed severe visual disturbances at the worst periods and a better recovery of visual acuity when compared with other studies. Analysis of clinical features of multiple sclerosis (MS) following ON showed a low rate of dissemination of ON (8.3%), frequent involvement of the spinal cord and MS with a benign nature.
