Effect of anti-suppression in exotropia by an on-and-off stimulation with the checkerboard pattern stimulator

For an anti-suppression and bifoveal fusion in cases with strabismus, a new instrument was developed which provides an on-and-off stimulation of a checkerboard pattern, each square of which is .apprx. 1.degree. in size. A simultaneous and homogenous stimulation was given by this instrument to 12 constant exotropes who had a history of intermittent deviation some years before, and to 6 intermittent exotropes who had a very unstable bifoveal fusion. Of the 12 cases of constant exotropia showed excellent recovery in bifoveal fusion and good stereopsis immediately after the checkerboard pattern stimulation, while only an unstale fusion was obtained in 2 cases and no fusion was oberved in the remaining 3 cases. All of the 6 intermittent exotropes demonstrated an easy and very stable bifoveal fusion after the stimulation. Apparently, this checkerboard pattern stimulation could provide cases of manifest strabismus with a very effective antisuppression and bifoveal fusion.
