The role of house-dust mites as a cause of asthma in Europe is reviewed and discussed with particular reference to mites as a component of house-dust allergens, the systematic position of the Pyroglyphidae, differentiation of the main European species (including keys to the males and females of Dermatophagoides pteronyssinus, D. farinae, Euroglyphus longior, E. maynei and Hirstia chelidonis), the development of pyroglyphid mites, their ecology, methods of isolating mites from house dust and methods of medical investigation.
