During 8 months, 37 of 124 infants admitted to a low birthweight nursery developed hypocalcaemia at a mean age of 29 h. Ten factors were associated with hypocalcaemia, 3 of which appear particularly relevant: low gestational age, 32 weeks or less with appropriate birthweight, low intake of Ca by mouth, correction of acidosis with NaHCO3.
