Salmonella oranienburg infection in a neonatal unit in New Delhi

An outbreak of multidrug resistant S. oranienburg in a neonatal unit of a children's hospital in New Delhi is reported. The outbreak occurred in Aug.-Sept., 1980, and presented as gastroenteritis and septicemia affecting 11 neonates. S. oranienburg was isolated from the stool of an asymptomatic mother. Out of 11 infants, 4 succumbed to the infection. Of 15 strains of S. oranienburg isolated during the epidemic, 12 showed the antibiotic resistance pattern [ARP] of AKT (ampicillin, kanamycin and tetracycline) and 3 had the ARP of AKST (ampicillin, kanamycin, streptomycin and tetracycline).
