From 1969-1980, 20 patients (13 males and 7 females) aged 17-35 underwent 25 total hip replacements. Follow-up ranged from 12-78 mo. Seven patients suffered from rheumatoid arthritis and ankylosing spondylitis. The remaining 13 suffered from diseases limited to the hips: early arthritis in congenital dislocation of the hip (4 patients), post-traumatic arthritis (5), aseptic necrosis of the femoral head following steroids (3) and giant cell tumor of the hip (1). Good results were obtained in all cases except for one in which deep seated infection required removal of the prosthesis. Three patients showed a relatively high rate of acetabular cup wear (1.5, 2 and 3.5 mm, respectively) during 4-5 yr of follow-up.
