Forty-one strains of yeast were studied for their capacity to degrade sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS). The highest capacity was characteristic of Candida. Yeast utilizes SDS only when there was in the medium an additional C source providing considerable biomass increment. In synthetic solid media with a high content of SDS yeast growth occurred only when the media were inoculated with thick suspensions. In the Rider liquid medium with vitamins, SDS at a concentration > 130 mg/l inhibited yeast growth.
