Diagnosis of lesions at the aorto-iliac level using Doppler examination linked to a hyperemia test

Doppler studies are compared with arteriography in the examination of arteries of 300 lower extremities, of which 151 had lesions at the aorto-iliac level and 149 did not. Comparison shows the great reliability of ultrasonic examination combined in certain cases with a simple reactional hyperemia test in the topographic diagnosis of lesions at this level. The hyperemia test provides a functional evaluation of proximal lesions that can guide the decision of whether to operate in cases of lesions associated with the femoral stage. The patients selected for this study were subjected to an arteriographic study. Arteriography should probably be used only in cases previously selected for surgical treatment. This study included cases of aortic lesions alone, aorto-femoral lesions, iliac lesions, ileofemoral lesions and lesions that began in the femoral stage only.
