Dextran-induced anaphylactic reactions in humans were recorded. Dextran 70 was used prophylactically against postoperative thromboembolism in 603 of 2338 operated patients and 12 probable cases of dextran-induced anaphylactic reactions were recorded (1.99%) of which 5 (0.83%) were serious. This is a very high incidence of dextran-induced anaphylactic reactions. This high incidence probably can be explained by a clustering effect; the real incidence of dextran-induced anaphylactic reactions may be lower.
