Information is presented based on the literature [1919-1978] and on experience with human leishmaniasis in the USSR. The morbidity of the population with visceral leishmaniasis decreased more than 7-fold in 1964-1978 as compared with that in 1950-1963. Cases of local human diseases with leishmaniases were recorded in the republics of the Transcaucasus, Central Asia and Kazakhstan. Visceral leishmaniasis was also reported in southern areas of the SFSR and Ukrainian SSR.
