Effects of reduced glutathione (GSH) on O2 dissociation curve (ODC) of blood was studied. Fifteen patients undergoing open heart surgery with extra corporeal circulation (ECC) were divided into 3 groups. The 1st group was control, the 2nd group was given GSH before ECC and the 3rd was given GSH during ECC. GSH 10 g was given in 30 min. Hb content, blood gases, ODC, and red cell 2,3-diphosphoglycerate content were measured before and after the administration of GSH, 1 h after ECC, and on the 1st and the 2nd day after the operation. No significant change in these parameters was observed among these 3 groups. Evidently, 10 g of GSH had no effect on ODC in patients who had cardiac surgery using ECC.
