Anesthetic management of a pheochromocytoma with sudden fall of blood glucose level immediately after adrenalectomy

A 36-yr-old woman had pheochromocytoma located in the left adrenal flank. Changes of the blood glucose level, serum insulin and catecholamines during and after the removal of the tumor were studied. The abrupt decrease of catecholamine and the increase of insulin secretion tend to produce hypoglycemia after tumor removal. Careful continuous monitoring of the blood glucose concentration during and after the operation is recommended to obviate this potentially fatal complication. [Thiopental, Halothane, N2O in O2 and propranolol were used in the anesthetic management of this case.].
