Phototoxic reactions from some common drugs provoked by a high-intensity UVA lamp

Human volunteers were tested for phototoxic reactions with high UVA doses after intake of 4 different drugs. Four out of 10 became more sensitive to UVA light after intake of nalidixic acid, 2 of 10 after hydrochlorothiazide, 1 out of 10 after doxycycline, but none of the 10 after promethazine. One person reacted unexpectedly with a polymorphous light eruption for 48 J/cm2 UVA even without drug intake. The safety of giving high UVA doses for cosmetic purposes in connection with drug intake is discussed.
