Schmidt's schema theory of discrete motor skill learning was examined with 24 ten year old mentally retarded boys and 2 nonretarded groups of boys matched on either MA . Subjects were randomly assigned to either a variable practice, constant practice or control condition. Following practice, all subjects were transferred to a novel situation within the same movement class. Results on initial transfer indicated that all subjects in the variable practice condition, regardless of group, performed with significantly less absolute error than did subjects in both the constant practice and control conditions, thus indicating support for schema formation.
