N-acetylneuraminate pyruvate lyase (EC 4.1.3.3) which splits and synthesizes neuraminic acid is found in plague agent. Aldolase activity of the plague microbes increases with the cultivation temperature up to 37.degree. C, as does neuraminidase activity. Cultivation at 37.degree. C results in a 10-30% decrease of the sialic acid content in the cells.
