Biosynthesis of porphyrins was investigated in premature infants after red blood cell (RBC) incubation with .delta.-aminolevulinic acid (.delta.-ALA). The study was also made of uro-, copro- and protoporphyrin, porphobilinogen and percent of .delta.-ALA used for the porphyrin synthesis. The content of Hb and RBC and hematocrit value were also determined. The content of uro-, copro-porphyrin and porphobilinogen in premature infants examined 10 h after birth was decreased, compared with that in their mothers and mature infants. The level of synthetized protoporphyrin was significantly elevated. On day 10 after birth, the content of synthetized porphyrins was close to that in the mothers of the premature infants. A correlation was observed between the porphyrin biosynthesis and the Hb content.
