Virulence, haemolysis pattern and haemophagocytosis index of Entamoeba histolytica

A total of 38 strains of E. histolytica isolated from stools of cases and hemolysis of RBC from different sources. Seven strains were virulent, 11 were avirulent and 20 with intermediate virulence. Cecal score of isolates from cases of amoebic dysentery was significantly higher than that of isolates from cases of nondysenteric amoebic colitis (P < 0.001). Of the 6 virulent isolates studied, 4 had hemophagocytosis index (HI) > 5 and 2 marginally < 5 (4.7 and 4.9). All of them were in the purview of 1 of the 2 hemolytic groups (R, CR). None of the 8 avirulent strains could be grouped into these hemolytic groups, and none had HI exceeding 5. The patterns in intermediate group overlapped with those shown by virulent and avirulent strains.
