Erythema nodosum as a marker of childhood tuberculosis

The clinical features and laboratory characteristics of 9 children with erythema nodosum are described. All patients had laboratory evidences of primary pulmonary tuberculosis; 2 had co-existent streptococcal throat infection. It seems that erythema nodosum represents de novo strongly positive Mantoux reaction to endogenous tuberculous proteins and its presence should alert the pediatricians to identify the site of tuberculous infection.
